Robert Kegan’s theory on adult development, while very compelling and inspiring to us, can, at times, be written in language that is turgid and difficult. In contrast, Jennifer Garvey Berger essentially serves as a translator in her book. Not only does she do a beautiful job at explaining the different stages of adult development (and she consciously focuses on the four we’ll likely see at play amongst professionals – Self-Sovereign, Socialized, Self-Authoring, and Self-Transforming), she also looks at these stages of development from very relevant vantage points such as how to coach someone from these different mind states, what leadership could look like in these stages, and how organizations can set up work, learning, and development to help people grow – at that magic convergence of personal and professional growth.
